Central Texas Schools: For Austin and the Surrounding Communities

Austin Has Some Excellent Schools

Most conversations about Real Estate in Austin, or in the Austin Area, includes a discussion about schools.

School quality matters when selecting real estate to purchase!

Fortunately, the Austin Area community is well-served by many high-quality schools and school districts, including:

  • Round Rock ISD (Independent School District)
  • Austin ISD
  • Austin Community College (ACC)
  • The University of Texas at Austin (UT)

Round Rock ISD

Round Rock ISD serves “southern Williamson County and northwest Travis County and includes the City of Round Rock and portions of the City of Austin and the City of Cedar Park.

The area covers 110 square miles encompassing high tech manufacturing and urban retail centers, suburban neighborhoods, and farm and ranch land. Zip codes within the district include: 78626, 78664, 78681, 78717, 78728, 78727, 78613, 78726, 78750, 78759, 78729” (Quoted from the District’s Profile page.)

In December 2009, US News and World Report awarded Westwood High School, which serves parts of Northwest Austin, including some areas of Travis and Williamson Counties, with a Silver Medal in it’s yearly ranking of America’s Best High Schools.

“The awards were based on each school’s College Readiness Index with college-ready student performance data derived from data provided by the College Board and/or International Baccalaureate of North America.”

Two other High Schools in the Austin Area, Westlake High School and Lake Travis High School also received Silver.

Austin ISD

Austin ISD serves central and southern Travis County.

According to AISD’s Inside AISD web pages,

“The Austin Independent School District serves 82,074 students on 110 campuses. Unlike many urban school districts in the U.S. today, AISD has a richly, diverse student community. It includes children from all economic levels and all kinds of backgrounds. Also unlike many other urban school districts, AISD enjoys widespread community support. AISD students come from homes in which 57 different native languages are spoken. These include children from Uzbekistan, the Sudan, Mexico, Bolivia, Vietnam and South Korea. Fifty-seven percent of our students are Hispanic, 27 percent are Anglo, 13 percent are African American, and 3 percent are Asian. More than half our students come from low-income families, and 20 percent enter our schools as English-Language Learners.”

Austin Community College (ACC)

Austin Community College has a great (and REAL) tag line:

“Start Here. Get There.”

The college has more than 40,000 credit students and 3,000 faculty and staff across seven full-service campuses. According to the college’s promo pages:

“ACC provides access to high-quality education at affordable tuition rates and produces the backbone of the local workforce. Whether enabling the dreams of individuals, or responding quickly to the training needs of local business and industry, ACC is a catalyst for economic development, social equity, and personal enrichment.”
