Measuring a Home: When You Should Hire a Pro

When Measuring a Home, Accuracy Counts

Measuring a HomeMost of the time, when you need to know the size of your home, you need to know the actual size of the home.

That means it needs to be measured correctly.

When You Can Measure Your Home by Yourself

If your home is a single-story rectangle, you can probably measure it yourself – as long as you just want an idea of the size of the home.

Your own measurements are good for your own information but are not likely to be accepted by agencies or real estate professionals for tax purposes or for selling.

When You Should Hire a Professional

For any of the following, you need to hire a professional real estate appraiser to measure your home:

  • Single-story homes that are not square or rectangular (especially if it has angles, like bay windows)
  • Multi-story homes
  • When you need accurate square footage for selling your home on your own as a FSBO (For Sale By Owner)
  • When you are protesting your property taxes and you think the size the tax district has isn’t accurate
  • When you need an accurate size for listing your home for sale with a real estate agent
